Miss Polynesia gets ready for Miss World contest

Miss Polynesia, Nanihi Bambridge, will go to the next Miss World beauty contest to be held December 12 in Johannesburg, South Africa. No less than 120 candidates from all over the world are expected to take part in the contest. "It is the first time I will be participating in an international beauty contest. I must say I'm afraid", Bambridge told Tahitipresse. The 19-year old beauty queen was elected last May in Tahiti's east coast commune of Pirae. "I just can't wait to be there, to see what is going on. And at the same time, I'm little bit worried, because I don't really know what to expect", Bambridge said. Miss Polynesia was to leave Tahiti Friday night. She was to bring with her two dresses for the Miss World election night. Bambridge will first stop three days in Paris "to see her boyfriend". Foundation to host Guinness World Record on November 19th
Elderly Australian couple, Richard Tendys and Wendy Stenberg-Tendys, CEO’s of YouMe Support Foundation, a registered charity in Vanuatu, are hosting a Guinness World Record on November 19th. The Tendys are raising the profile of Vanuatu on the world scene, by attempting a Guinness World Record, with the hope of being able to raise enough funds to enroll some more children into high school in the new year. On November 19th, 2009, 820 Ni-Vanuatu children will attempt to beat the world record for ‘The Most Number Of People To Write a Story In 24 Hours’. The current record is held by 797 participants, organized by Novum Verlag GmbH in Neckenmarkt, Austria, on 15th July, 2007. Vanuatu has around 156 different languages, in a tropical island archipelago that stretches across nearly 1000 kms. For the majority of the Ni-Vanuatu children English is either a second or third language, following their home island language and Bishlama, the local common language used by the Ni-Vanuatu people. Tonga tops World Bank survey
'Business Advantage Tonga' published, as Tonga moves to top the Pacific 'Doing Business' rankings. The publication of Business Advantage Tonga 2009/10, first business and investment guide to the Pacific Kingdom. The publication follows the release last month of the Word Bank's latest Doing Business rankings, which show Tonga has overtaken Fiji as the easiest place to do business in the Pacific, as measured by the Word Bank's 10 criterias.

Now on a steady course of recovery following the civil disturbances of November 2006, Tonga is entering a new era of reform and growth. The Government is undertaking an ambitious program of pro-business reform aimed at stimulating the private sector. Grassi Museum bringt Südsee nach Leipzig

Leipzig. Seit drei Wochen werkelt Hausbaumeister Simeona Saipele (67) vom Südsee-Atoll Niutao/Tuvalu im Grassi Museum für Völkerkunde in Leipzig. Mit drei Landsleuten baut er ein traditionelles Tuvalu-Haus aus Schraubenbaum auf. Das Haus soll ein Herzstück der neuen Ausstellung „Ozeanien - Von Australien bis zur Osterinsel“ werden. Sie wird am 26. November eröffnet. Das Grassi werde damit das weltweit einzige Museum sein, in dem ein original Riff-Insel-Haus steht, sagte Ausstellungs-Kuratorin Marion Melk-Koch, am Mittwoch.

Simeona Saipele und seine Helfer brauchen für den Hausbau keinen einzigen Nagel. Nur Hölzer, Blätter und Kokosschnur sorgen dafür, dass ein sturmfestes Haus entsteht. Die Materialien wurden eigens von der Insel-Republik im Pazifik nach Leipzig eingeflogen. Das Haus soll besonders für museums- und umweltpädagogische Angebote genutzt werden nutzen. Tuvalu etwa sei sehr stark vom Klimawandel und dem Anstieg des Meeresspiegels betroffen. „Wenn das so weiter geht, wird es diese Insel in zehn, zwanzig Jahren aller Voraussicht nach nicht mehr geben“, sagte Museumsdirektor Claus Deimel.

Die neue Ozeanien-Ausstellung werde den Fokus insgesamt nicht nur auf die Kunst der Einwohner von Asien bis Polynesien richten. Auch die Lebensart - und damit verbunden das brandaktuelle Thema Klimawandel - sollen ein Schwerpunkt sein. Rund 30 000 Gegenstände umfasst die Sammlung. Erstmals seit 30 Jahren werden Teile davon vom 26. November an wieder dauerhaft in Leipzig präsentiert.
