Princess Frederica from Tonga in Germany

Tongan meeting in Bonn

Princess Frederica arrived with a small delegartion of three people from Tonga in Germany on 25th of August. The other two are Maopa Kupu and Siosiua Fonua. The main purpose for this trip is a function for the opening of the James Cook exhibition in Bonn. Princess Pilolevu was invited to come over but after the ferry disaster of the "Princess Ashika" in the homeland the princess decided to stay at home  on the side of her people. So now it is the first official function alone for Princess Frederica. On the first day the delegation visited Cologn. The cathedral (Dom) gave a great impression the guests from Tonga.

Tongan meeting at Hilton Hotel in Bonn

Princess Frederica of Tonga
at Hilton Hotel in Bonn/Germany

Frederica is a very uncommon name for a member of the Royal family from Tonga. Even it sounds very German but in connection with a male name! That's why we were asking her if there is any story about that. Very open she tells us the story. During the year 1983 her grandfather King Tautaahau Tupou V did a trip to Germany. Some of you will remember. He did very well for the Germans to promote his country. But anyway after a short period one German of noble birth had a phone call with her mother Princess Pilolevu knowing about her pregnancy he made the proposal that this child should have the German name Friedrich. If it's a boy of course, yes but later on when the child was born and it was a girl the Princess remembers the phone call with this German nobleman and this word was transformed into a female name and became Frederica.
After this meeting everyone had to prepare for the opening of the James Cook exhibition.
